Frequently Asked Questions About LASIK Surgery
Knowing that the physiology of their eyes is about to undergo a major change, it's only normal that most LASIK patients have some questions about caring for their eyes before and after the surgery. Below, we address four of LASIK patients most frequently asked refractive surgery questions.
What preexisting conditions can complicate LASIK?
Some eye abnormalities like larger than average pupils may make you a more at-risk LASIK patient. Other conditions like dry eyes make it harder for your eyes to heal and lengthen the recovery process while also putting you at an increased risk for inflammation and/or infections. An autoimmune disease may also complicate the healing process. When consulting your LASIK eye surgeon pre-op, it is important that you disclose all preexisting conditions in addition to the medications you're currently taking to prevent such complications where possible.
Do I need to make any preparations for the surgery?
If you are currently on any medications, you may be asked to cease taking them for a set amount of time prior to your LASIK surgery. You will also be asked to refrain from wearing soft contact lenses for up to a week prior to your operation and hard lenses for up to two weeks prior. Because most surgeons only use a very mild anesthetic during the procedure, patients are generally advised that they SHOULD eat prior to their operation. Men will also be advised to shave their faces, and women will be asked to refrain from wearing makeup and to pull their hair up to avoid irritating their sensitive post-op eyes.
How long will I need to protect my eyes following surgery?
LASIK patients should plan to wear sunglasses or goggles continuously for the first 24 to 48 hours following their refractive surgery. You will also be asked to rest and avoid reading, driving or anything else that may strain your eyes within this crucial stage in your recovery period. You should continue to wear goggles while showering for up to a week after your surgery to avoid abrading your eyes with soap, and for the same reason should also refrain from wearing eye makeup or from participating in contact sports for several days following the procedure.
What side effects can I expect following surgery?
Some common side effects of LASIK surgery include but are not limited to: a dull pain, mild inflammation, headaches, and dry eyes. In most cases, the discomfort caused by these side effects can be resolved with artificial tears and an over-the-counter pain killer. More serious side effects include: flap wrinkles, infection, and under/overcorrection. If the pain or inflammation increases and/or vision does not start to improve within 24 hours following surgery, patients should contact their doctor immediately.
