Cutting-Edge Laser Refractive Surgery at Our Long Island Office

At our Long Island practice, all eye surgery procedures are guided by the best technology available today. Along with Dr. Weinstein's 40 years of experience and personalized care during every step of the process, these innovations help patients achieve impressive visual outcomes with less of a chance of unwanted visual side effects.

Carl Zeiss Meditec IOLMaster®

Zeiss system

The Carl Zeiss Meditec IOLMaster® is a state of the art system that evaluates the length of the eye, the surface curvature and the intraocular lens power. In cataract surgery, the eye's natural lens is replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL). Intraocular lenses come in different sizes and powers. Dr. Weinstein uses the IOLMaster® to take precise measurements of your eyes, so the correct lens can be chosen to compensate for individual patients needs.

Accurate measurement is a critical element in planning for cataract surgery. The Carl Zeiss Meditec IOLMaster® ensures that your surgery is as accurate as possible. The IOLMaster® has been approved by the FDA, and has more accuracy than a scan alone. It doesn't require eye contact, thus reducing the chance of infection. Testing is fast and efficient, ensuring patient safety and comfort.

Catalys® Precision Laser System

Catalys systemThe Catalys® system is a newly developed laser system that aids in the removal of your cataract. It creates precise incisions and pre-treats your cataract for simpler removal. It can also reduce or eliminate moderate levels of astigmatism. The advantage of the Catalys system is its laser precision.

Ora™ System

The Ora system can be used during your surgery to take additional measurements to help ensure that your Intraocular Lens (IOL) is the best power for you. The Ora™system is especially beneficial for patients who have had refractive surgery in the past.

Orbscan® Pre-Operative Testing

Orbscan® imaging technology is used both before and after refractive surgery to map the corneal surface. This advanced imaging method is a crucial part of the laser refractive eye surgery experience at our Long Island practice. It helps determine the nature and extent of your refractive irregularities, and whether you are a LASIK candidate.

The Orbscan® system has the ability to identify complex refractive errors not detected by less-advanced imaging devices. Amazingly, this system acquires 9,000 data points in just 1.5 seconds. It can measure your cornea’s thickness – a key aspect of LASIK candidacy — and is the only system able to image the posterior surface of the cornea.

This laser eye surgery pre-test is quick, easy, and painless. Most importantly, it gives your LASIK surgeon a superior image of your eyes, so you can enjoy a more effective customized laser refractive surgery procedure. At our Long Island practice, pre-operative testing is a key part of the superior Weinstein Refractive Center LASIK experience.

In the past, the creation of the corneal flap during LASIK surgery used to be rudimentary; the surgeon would use a microkeratome, a hand-held steel device, to cut the corneal flap, and this flap was the most common source of complications after surgery. However, IntraLase® bladeless LASIK means that the creation of the corneal flap is just as advanced as the other components of the LASIK procedure.

IntraLase® LASIK creates a smoother, thinner, and more uniform corneal flap, and is associated with fewer flap-related complications, which inconvenience the patient by requiring return visits to Dr. Weinstein’s office. In addition, clinical studies have shown that IntraLase® can help patients achieve 20/20 vision, or better in a greater number of cases.

The IntraLase® laser is computer-guided and extremely precise. It works by delivering rapid pulses of light to a preprogrammed location and depth on the cornea. Each pulse forms a microscopic bubble, and these bubbles eventually connect to form the corneal flap. Dr. Weinstein then peels back this flap and proceeds with the LASIK surgery.

In addition to fewer complications and greater visual outcomes, IntraLase® is able to treat a larger number of patients. Those who may have been precluded from traditional LASIK by thin, flat, or steep corneas may be able to benefit from IntraLase® bladeless LASIK. Please contact Dr. Weinstein today to learn more about the most advanced LASIK technology available.

VISX® Star 4 with Iris Registration Laser Vision Correction System

This laser refractive eye surgery system available at our Long Island office allows the surgeon to provide each patient with a procedure that is comfortable, customized, and more effective than earlier LASIK methods.

A complete vision correction system, VISX® Star 4 features three-dimensional ActiveTrack™ eye tracking, so the surgeon can better track your eye movements during surgery. It also features seven variable-sized beams, which allow for faster treatment and smoother ablation, leading to better healing and less removal of corneal tissue.

The VISX® Star 4 system produces better refractive surgery results with fewer complications such as glare, halos, and reduced night vision. It is just one of the premier pieces of technology that allows us to offer a superior refractive surgery experience at our Long Island practice.

WaveScan™ and CustomVue™

WaveScan™ is able to precisely measure your eyes’ imperfections so they can be effectively treated during the custom laser refractive surgery procedure. The digital information gathered by WaveScan™ during the mapping of your eyes (known as a Wavefront™ map) is integrated with the VISX® Star 4 excimer laser system, which carries out the CustomVue™ custom LASIK procedure.

The CustomVue™ procedure, guided by WaveScan™ technology, yields impressive clinical results. In an FDA study that followed patients one year after undergoing the CustomVue™ procedure, all patients could pass a driving test without glasses or contacts, and 98 percent had 20/20 vision or better without using glasses or contacts.
